I'm one of the three keynote speakers at the Stewardship Summit 2024 being held in London on April 10. If you’d like to attend, follow this link for a 15% discount on the £250 registration fee.
The organizer of the event is ESG Investor, and they are well aware of my critical take on ESG investing in general—given the reliance of finance professionals on the work of academic economists on climate change. As I note in my paper “The appallingly bad neoclassical economics of climate change” and my report for Carbon Tracker Loading the DICE against pension funds: Flawed economic thinking on climate has put your pension at risk, the assertions by economists that, to quote the IPCC 2022 report:
warming of ~4°C may cause a 10–23% decline in annual global GDP by 2100 relative to global GDP without warming (Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, Chapter 16, page 2459)
are ludicrous. Scientists doubt that human civilisation will survive this amount of global warming:
The current risk category of dangerous warming is extended to more categories, which are defined by us here as follows: >1.5 °C as dangerous; >3 °C as catastrophic; and >5 °C as unknown, implying beyond catastrophic, including existential threats. (Xu and Ramanathan 2017,"Well below 2 °C: Mitigation strategies for avoiding dangerous to catastrophic climate changes." Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 114(39): 10315-10323.)
I hope to see some of you there. Do introduce yourself after my session.
